Anthony Covelli has a strong performance background in both classical saxophone music and jazz. Classical performances include Ida Gotkovsky’s Brillance, John Harbison’s San Antonio Sonata, Paul (Pierre)-Agricole Genin’s Variations sur un theme Espagnol, Paul Creston’s Sonata for Alto Saxophone in Eb and Piano, John Williams’ Escapades, Ryo Noda’s Improvisation 3, Alexander Glazounov’s Concerto for Alto Saxophone in Eb, William Schuman’s XXV Opera Snatches, Jean Francaix’s Cinq Danses Exotiques, and Darius Milhaud’s Scaramouche. Current work includes Masonori Katoh’s Madrid Inspiration.
Jazz performances contained several years of concerts with the University of Delaware’s Jazz Ensemble I as Lead Alto Sax. Highlights include being the featured soloist on Pat Metheny’s Wherever You Go and The Heat of The Day, Hank Levy’s Decoupage, Antonio Carlos Jobim’s One Note Samba, Frank Mantooth’s arrangement of Invitation, and Alan Blaylock’s Hickory and Twine.
Anthony has also been a featured performer in three performances with the University of Delaware Symphony Orchestra. These programs included Jule Styne’s Gypsy Overture, George Gershwin’s An American in Paris, and this past fall’s performance of Maurice Ravel’s famous orchestration of Pictures at an Exhibition. His interest in performing in an orchestra, and continuing study to pursue a music education degree sparked his desire to learn cello, which he is currently taking lessons for and performed in his first concert on cello with the University of Delaware Symphony Orchestra in March 2011. Lastly, Anthony was the saxophonist in the 2010 premiere of William Walton’s Façade: An Entertainment, at the University of Delaware.
Anthony Covelli completed his first student teaching placement at Havre de Grace High School and achieved unparalleled success. Under his direction the Concert Band received a straight Superior rating at the Harford County band festival for the first time in the history of the school. The success continued as Anthony again directed the combined Concert band at the Maryland State Festival on April 28, 2011 where they received a Superior Rating, again for the first time in the school’s history. Working alongside the established director at Havre de Grace, Richard Hauf, Anthony was given the opportunity to develop and fine-tune his teaching as he prepares for a full-time job. “I can’t thank Rick [Hauf] enough for the support, direction, and opportunity he gave me while working with his program for the last 8 weeks. It was an experience I’ll never forget.”
Looking to the future, Anthony hopes to continue performing along with teaching students in private lessons and in the classroom. The ability to make music come alive within an ensemble and in each student is the achievement he is aiming for. Anthony realizes that to have his students understand the expression and emotion elicited from a piece of music is the final product of hard work and a willingness to put your students before you. His philosophy uses this thought and the thought that one day the students will continue to portray that expression and emotion they learned from their educators “At some point the playing will end for us, but our passion for music will continue to be seen through our students.”
